3. Connecting your domain name to your web hosting

NOTE – This short section assumes your server and domain providers are separate companies. If using the same company for both follow their guidance on how to do this.

3 a. Access Your Hosting Control Panel

Before you start make sure you have your login details for both your domain provider and hosting provider as you will need both details.

Step 1– The first thing to do is open a web browser and navigate to your hosting provider’s website. Login to the site using the login details you provided at the point of buying the server space.

3 b. Find your Nameservers

Step 1– Navigate to the hosting control panel, often this is called cPanel.

Step 2– Look for the DNS or Nameserver section in your hosting control panel. Note down the nameservers (e.g., ns1.yourhost.com, ns2.yourhost.com).

3 c. Update Nameservers in Domain Registrar

Step 1–  Open a new tab in your browser and navigate to the website of your domain name provider and login with the details you provided when purchasing the domain name.

Step 2– Go to the DNS settings or domain management area.

Step 3– Find the option to update nameservers and enter the nameservers from your hosting provider that you have just noted down.

Step 4– Save the changes.

Congratulations!! You now have a domain name and server linked together ready to start building your website and have completed this short course.
